The things that you keep within arm’s reach while you snooze can say a lot about you—and how you sleep at night. Below, popular mom bloggers share what they keep close by when they shut their eyes, and how these items help them hit the sack. Follow their lead for sounder sleep.
“I enjoy reading a book for 20 minutes in bed to unwind before I go to sleep. It brings me down from the stresses of the day and stops me from thinking about my to-do list (i.e. Did I remember to pack the kids’ backpacks? Did I RSVP to Sue’s wedding? Did I add ranch dressing to the grocery list?). I prefer reading an actual book by soft lamp light, so I’m not bothered by the bright light of my iPad or phone screen. I used to read fiction, like Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn and Confessions of a Shopaholic by Sophie Kinsella. But at the end of every chapter, I couldn’t wait for the next one, so I’d either stay up for hours reading or lie restlessly in bed thinking about what would happen next! Now I read self-help books, like The Gifts of Imperfection by Brene Brown and You Can Heal Your Life by Louise Hay. They instill positive thoughts and help me fall asleep faster.”

“The most important sleep-related item on my night table is my diffuser. I use essential oils to help me fall asleep at night. I always diffuse lavender oil because its scent helps me relax, but I sometimes mix in cedarwood oil (another peaceful oil) to change the scent a little.”

“My kids wake me up each morning bright and early at 5:45am, so it’s really important that I get as much sleep as possible. I always keep an alarm clock on my night table, because knowing what time it is helps me get into bed no later than 11:00pm. To fall asleep faster and relax, I often use the alarm clock’s white noise feature. It’s especially helpful if one of my kids can’t sleep and climbs into bed with me and wakes me up. We have two dogs—a Yorkie and a Maltese—and when they get up in the middle of the night, the sound of their paws on the house floor can be distracting. The white noise feature drowns all that out.”
